How LimeSpot chooses products to recommend

What each recommendation box type looks at, how LimeSpot learns from your shoppers, and what happens when a box has too few products.

Each LimeSpot recommendation box uses a different signal to choose products: what a product is similar to, what sells together, what's popular, or what this shopper has looked at. Knowing the signal helps you pick the right box for each page.

How LimeSpot learns

  • It works from day one. When you install, LimeSpot imports your catalog and order history. Similar products and Bought Together work right away.

  • It learns from shoppers. LimeSpot first learns from up to 60 days of shopper activity. After that it keeps learning from views, time on page, add-to-carts and purchases.

  • It stays current. The shopper-behavior model is rebuilt about every 12 hours from the last 10 days of activity. Popularity is refreshed about every 30 minutes, and trending about every 3 hours.

  • It reacts to catalog changes. When you edit a product, LimeSpot recalculates which products are similar to it.

Products that are unpublished, or that have no variant available to buy, aren't recommended. A variant is available when it's in stock, its inventory isn't tracked, or it can be sold when out of stock. See How your product catalog syncs.

Help LimeSpot understand your products

  • Keep product data tidy. Related Products leans on collections, product types, vendors and keywords. Products that share these are seen as related.

  • Group products in collections. Related Products, Most Popular, New Arrivals and Featured Collection boxes all use your collections.

When a box has too few products

  • A box with no products is hidden. Shoppers never see an empty box.

  • Cross Sell, Upsell and Bought Together have a Fallback setting. It chooses what to show when LimeSpot has nothing for that product, for example Show Popular or Show Trending. If it's set to Hide Box, the box stays hidden. See Recommendation box settings explained.

Tip

In Studio, history-based boxes such as Recently Viewed can look empty or show sample products, because Studio has no shopping history of its own. Shoppers see their own products.

Troubleshooting

Why

What to do

A recommendation looks unrelated

The products share collections, keywords or a product type, or shoppers often browse them together.

Check how products are grouped in collections, product types and vendors.

Bought Together shows few products

Your store doesn't have many orders with those products together yet.

Set a Fallback such as Show Related, or use Related Products.

A box is missing on the live store

It has no products for that shopper or page, so it's hidden.
